I'm a long-time fan of MJ's Undead series - while Betsy can get a bit manic now and again, I just love her and Sink Lair, and the whole gang. This anthology features new characters, as well as folks from MJ's other series, which I found very entertaining (and inspiring - I hadn't read any of Fred the Mermaid's books, but now really want to!). I was feeling a bit down in the dumps and reached for this knowing it would cheer me up. It actually exceeded my expectations and I gobbled it up pretty quickly, resenting every second I had to put it down. It's just *fun*.

I also appreciated MJ's "theme" for this, and liked seeing Betsy accept her fate as leader of her people and basically laying it out for another that this was *her* fate as well. Betsy's grown a lot and it shows. It did turn me off, a bit, to see Sinclair behaving rather...unlike himself, but I suppose his goofy euphoria is to be expected (given the amazing changes he's recently been through) and may be a set up for the next book in the series (which patiently awaits my attention on my to-be-read stack). One thing I wonder about in the series - it seems that Betsy gets to really shine only when Sinclair's otherwise not actively in the picture. I'd like to see them being badasses together more often, which I think Betsy's now ready for.

That last bit notwithstanding, I just love the strong chicks in this book and I was all smiles the entire time I read it. Recommended for those who prefer a lot of humor in their paranormals (which I totally do), folks in need of a light-hearted read, and fans of heroic babes, of all ages.

Undead and Underwater MaryJanice Davidson 9780425253328 Books Reviews

I am so disappointed in this book, I have been looking forward to this book since the sale date announced, only to feel tricked by Mary Janice Davidson and her publisher. I called and even though I was well passed the policy of 7 day return policy they agreed to refund my money. Big thank you to for terrific customer service. I hope Ms. Davidson looks the reviews over and realizes that she really stepped in it this time. Do not waste your money on this book, I am sorry that the company that will suffer will be . Shame on you, Ms Davidson and your publisher too.
Wel I got this book to go with the rest of the series expecting another great book. Well I only found half a great book. The first half was about a couple characters I have never even heard about till this book. One is a super girl which I guess is new and the other was some water chick from another series of the authors I have never read before, So I was completely lost. Didn't even finish those stories. Skipped to the last story which was about one of the pack members which I still had to really think about who she was. That at least was a good read. So If the undead series is the only series you have read, expect to be completely lost in the beginning and not have any idea whats goin on.
I thoroughly enjoyed the first few Undead books, however, over the past few years, the quality of the books has really diminished. Betsy has become more self involved than ever, the stories are nonstop dialogue, and she managed to turn everyone's favorite fictional sexy vampire into a complete parody of himself. He is no longer the stoic Alpha Male vampire king we came to know and love; instead he is a sentimental, petulant, whiny, insipid beta male vampire king. Frankly, it is hard to read.
I thought this book would be a full Betsy novel in which she teams up with Fred the mermaid. Apparently I did not do enough reading on the website to realize this was nothing more than an anthology. Three short little stories, perfect for an hour of reading while the kids are asleep.

Seeing as how I thoroughly enjoyed the Fred the Mermaid series, I completely skipped the first story and went straight into the second.

It took me maybe half an hour to read, and the whole time I found myself confused. It says that Fred's hair is red. Yes, Jonas dyed it, however it states in one of the mermaid books that dye washed out of her hair as soon as she does the transformation from human to mermaid. She did the transition for Betsy and NEA and yet her hair stayed red. Secondly, The story had far too much dialogue. I think this was to make up for the story's lack of a climax. I mean, we find out who this bad guy is, he says he blames Fred for killing his unborn son and wife, however we don't know why it is specifically Fred he blames, how they died, what this doomsday device ACTUALLY does... The list goes on. There was no point to the story. At all. I couldnt help my severe disappointment.

Also the third thing I realized is all of MJD's female characters... Well, Betsy, Fred, and even Nicole from the Alaska series, They all have this cookie cutter personality. Honestly, if you interchange Fred's name with Betsy's and mermaid to vampire, you would never realize that it wasn't a Betsy book. Fred is pretty much Betsy with a fin. Jonas has the exact same personality as Marc.

Perhaps it is time to end the Betsy series. She has obviously lost her passion for these novels, and it seems like she is cranking out just anything to make a profit.

I definitely won't recommend this book to anyone. It is nothing but a waste of money, and a severe let down.
WTF? I am halfway through the first story and there is no mention of Queen Betsy at all. I thought that maybe something went wrong with the book download to my so I came to look at it on and I guess it is the right book. Why would they name it a Queen Betsy book if it doesn't even have Queen Betsy in it? Apparently there are 3 stories (according to the other reviews) and one of them has Queen Betsy in it but I feel so betrayed, I don't know that I want to keep reading. I think I will just give up and start reading a different book now. Boooooooo to MaryJanice Davidson who I previously liked for Queen Betsy and Fred the Mermaid. On to other authors now.
I didn't care for first story. It seemed to start in middle of story and confusing . Now other two stories were great. Betsy part left me racking brain in trying to remember previous books since it's been a long time from reading last book. Lara's book however I thought was hilarious. Perfect blend of past books, New story, sibling rivalry and of course plenty of sarcasm. If it weren't for first story this would be a 5 star book
