Darkscope skillfully weaves mystery, suspense, thrills, chills and horror into an exquisitely tense story of family secrets, lies and deception.

Chelsea McCord’s marriage is on the rocks and moves back to Bisbee, AZ to be welcomed home by her uncle, Bob. Soon after moving into a little bungalow, Chelsea finds an old Kodak box camera and uses it to take pictures around the small desert town. While looking through the viewfinder, Chelsea sees images from the past; Bisbee how it was 40 years ago. When she develops the film, she finds images of the same woman as she grows from a child to a young woman. Who is she? What are her ties to Chelsea, whose family has a long legacy in the small mining town?

This review is really hard to write. On one hand, I have tons to say about the excellent plot but I don’t want to give anything away! I think this is an amazing read any time of the year, but definitely perfect for Halloween. Vengeful ghosts, haunted cameras, visions of horrible deaths, it’s got it all. This was a real edge of your seat story that just drew me in deeper with each page, one of those books where you don’t have an inkling what’s going on until it’s revealed in the story, making you feel a little off-balance and a little unsteady, which really heightened the suspense.

At the heart of the book was the mystery of a woman who disappeared in the 1940s, as told in the present day as well as the past. I loved how the old box camera told the story; the smell of death coming from the camera, the snapshots, and literally chasing Chelsea through the house (which was creepy and a little funny at the same time. All I kept thinking about was The Brave Little Toaster.) The subplots, Chelsea’s ex, Bob’s run for governor, and Sunshine, really added to the tense atmosphere and kept the story moving at a breakneck pace.

Overall, I really enjoyed Darkscope and it was a bargain at only 99¢ on Amazon. I definitely recommend it as a Halloween read or for fans of paranormal mysteries.

Darkscope edition by J Carson Black Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews

This is just a straight up horror story. It's not bad. My only real complaint is that the story is terribly complex. I had trouble keeping all the relationships straight.
I wasn't sure I would like this "ghost" story, but once I got into it I loved it! Chelsea McCord needs a change and so she goes to her great uncle's place. In the house she finds an old camera and when she looks into it she finds herself in a different time period.
The book is about the McCord family who owned a copper mine, and a young woman who was murdered. It is this young lady's ghost who is out for revenge against Bob McCord who supposedly accidentally shot her. There are many twists and turns and it was really worth reading.
This book was definitely different from the other J Carson Black books that I have read. Can't say this is the type of book I like so will skip any more like this. I do like the detective books and will keep reading her stories.
Although I've downloaded several of this author's books, this is the first I've read. I was hooked during the first chapter - one of the best first chapters I've read in awhile. The book became a bit confusing to me as it switched from present to past, but I finally figured out the construct and felt the book flowed freely to the end. The writing reminds me a bit of one of my other favorite modern thriller authors (Scott Nicholson), because of her absolutely beautiful use of metaphor and ability to create powerful images in the mind of the reader

"The sound that was no sound poured out of the radio. The sound of Amelia Earhart lost over the ocean, the sound of nuclear winter, the sound of the lost. It stayed with her, battering her consciousness, almost unbearable, the colorless landscape of dread silence."

It's the kind of writing you just want to read over and over. Beautifully-crafted "ghost" story/thriller.
I'm the type of person who loves paranormal mystery novels, but this fell short. It was paranormal (ghosts) and it was a mystery (who is the killer?), but the story seemed to drone on and on and focus on tangents that didn't add to the plot. The characters were naive and the main character, Chelsea, was weak and kind of an idiot for being touted as being from a notoriously strong, independent family that takes care of themselves.

Some parts of the book were genuinely interesting and I didn't want to put it down, but then the ending to the excitement always fell flat.

Then there's a specific scene when Chelsea is on the phone with Bob when the camera "surprises" her (I hate spoilers so I'm leaving it vague), but I seriously laughed out loud. My husband asked me if I was reading a comedy. "I don't think it's supposed to be," I answered. Ridiculous.

Why three stars? Because there were parts I liked and other parts I really, really wanted to like but couldn't get into. It's not a bad book. Just kind of a cheesy mystery.
After reading J Carson Black's Laura Cardinal series I was not really sure what to expect since this book isn't part of that series. The book was like all J Carson Blacks books & one of her greatest strengths IMHO - she makes you feel like you are there & part of the story. She does such a wonderful job of describing everything without sounding fake or looking like she just added things to make the story longer.

In this book there are several stories taking place (2 major and 1 very minor). It is not hard to follow them except I would advise you to read this book over the course of a couple of days and not go on vacation w/o finishing it like I did. I had to think about who a couple of minor characters were when introduced again. All the characters were interesting and it was a hard book to put down because you want to know what happens.

There was no swearing and no sex for those of you who don't like that in your books. The book was not too long or too short and everything is wrapped up at the end of the book. Nothing was left hanging and you felt like you had the answers to everything.

All in all it was another great story and I can't wait to read her next book!
