Eight Children and a Truck Annecath Vestly Patricia Crampton 9780416767001 Books

Another fantastic book from Norwegian author, Anne Cath Vestly. Here you meet the eight children who live with their parents, in a two room apartment! The family is tight-knit, loving and have great adventures as only siblings can!
The whole family depends on Dad's truck, to support the large family, by delivering packages for local stores.
One day when the truck is stolen, the children set out to find it and make their dad happy again.
During this time, they manage to have adventures with their old-world, visiting grandmother and their neighbors.
A feel good book that will want you reading more about The Eight Children.
The Eight Children books in the USA have skyrocketed in price! Very unfortunate as it keeps these treasured stories from being available to the kids here! If you can find them reasonably, get them! You won't regret it.

Eight Children and a Truck Annecath Vestly Patricia Crampton 9780416767001 Books Reviews

Vestly's Eight Children and a Truck is a children's classics and it should be back in print and published in English. I grew up on this great book and would like to purchase for my family and friends to read this great book to their children. We should have more offers available on and it's a shame we don't have enough offers of this book.
I am reviewing this book based on a Russian translation. I wanted to get this book for our friends, a family in which the father is one of 8 siblings. It is a shame that the book is out of print in English. It is a vibrant portrayal of a great family, their daily struggles and adventures that might not take them further than a neighboring forest but are still captivating and emotionally gripping. I read this book to my 2 daughters, 6 and 4, and they both find it utterly fascinating. In fact, we are reading it for the second time in the space of a few months. I derive as much pleasure from it as they do. The book concerns daily matters, but it is precisely this that makes it so easy to relate to. Each member of the family has his/her personality drawn out in clear detail, and while the youngest, Morten, and grandma get more center stage space, all the other members of the family are equally important. This is a great book to teach kids about family dynamics. It does not matter that they have 8 kids and we only 2, we can relate to it entirely. The family would probably be considered below poverty level by modern American standards - all the more reasons to put it back in print. The reader will learn from it how to go on vacation, stay in a barn, have a mad ride on homemade sleds, and have a better time than any hotel can possibly provide. Or how about learning that it is possible to have one huge pot of porridge for dinner and be totally fine with it. Make a wooden horse that will have magic powers that only the youngest child can evoke. ( we actually cried while reading this episode from anxiety and relief when the horse was finally completed, sorry about spoilers). How can a mother possibly take care of all the washing? Well, let the children wash their little items themselves every night. Yes, at moments the book does become just a tiny bit idealistic, but the author does not glaze over the main facts of their lives, and remains always on very honest, serious terms with her young audience. It might sound cliche, but this book does remind one of true family values, team work and emotional honesty, without which a family cannot exist, any family, not just a poor one with 8 kids and a grandma. I believe it is a necessary read for all times, but especially today, when everyone cries out in panic about overconsumption and environmental crisis. If we still believe that books teach us valuable lessons and have the power to change our behavior then this book should be on top of the summer reading list.
